About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer to join our engineering team and help build the systems that power Toptal's talent acquisition and applicant tracking workflows. You will work on a high-impact platform used internally to source, evaluate, and onboard the world's top 3% of technical talent.
This is a fully remote, full-time position. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers across multiple time zones.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain robust Rails APIs consumed by internal and external clients
- Contribute to architecture decisions and technical roadmap discussions
- Write clean, well-tested code with a strong emphasis on code quality and maintainability
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers
- Collaborate with product and design teams to translate requirements into scalable solutions
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in existing systems
- Mentor junior engineers and help uphold engineering standards
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional experience with Ruby on Rails
- Strong understanding of RESTful API design principles
- Experience with PostgreSQL and writing performant queries
- Proficiency with background job processing (Sidekiq or similar)
- Solid understanding of software design patterns and object-oriented principles
- Experience working in distributed, remote-first engineering teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision
Nice to Have
- Experience with GraphQL APIs
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and Kafka
- Prior experience with applicant tracking or HR tech platforms
- Contributions to open-source Ruby projects
